In this issue of Buddhism Today, we celebrate four moments in the development of Diamond Way Buddhism. We are honored to do this.
First is the UNESCO award that Lama Ole Nydahl received in Malaga, Spain, in June 2015.
Second, the first English publication of the talk that Hannah Nydahl gave at the 2003 Diamond Way summer course in Kassel.
Third, a moving story by John Masciocchi about his journey to Nepal—meeting with Sherab Gyaltsen Rinpoche, visiting sacred caves, and his astounding experience in the eye of the earthquake. This is followed by Anilou Price’s and Pavel Jirsa’s pictorial report on important places and recent events in Nepal, including the April 2015 earthquake and its aftermath, as well as the dedication of Sherab Gyaltsen Rinpoche’s new monastery in Kathmandu in November 2015.
Finally, a series of essays that outline the current status of Diamond Way retreat centers and retreat center lands in the United States.
Throughout all four of these moments, we witness the timeless aspect of buddha mind and the important and useful emanations in today’s world. Above all, we celebrate Lama Ole Nydahl’s achievements as mirrored in the UNESCO award and Hannah Nydahl’s life of service, as told in Kerstin Seifert’s inspiring biography.

On April 18, 2015, near the start of a one-month visit to Nepal, John and his German traveling companion, Klaus Philipp, had an audience with Sherab Gyaltsen Rinpoche at his home. They had planned side trips to Darjeeling, Jomsom, and Bodhgaya. During their conversation, Rinpoche instead advised them to go to Milarepa’s cave in the Yolmo Valley, vetoing their other options.
John and Klaus passed several days gathering maps and trekking supplies in anticipation of following Rinpoche’s directive. They departed from Kathmandu on April 22. They visited Milarepa’s cave, Guru Rinpoche’s cave, and other power places before the 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck.
