There are many brief biographical texts about Saraha. Some give an overview of his life. Others recount individual episodes from his life. Occasionally they overlap, but other times they change individual motifs or significantly deviate from one another. Over the centuries, many of these stories of Buddhist teachers were passed on orally and written down later. In many of these Indian and Tibetan narratives about Saraha, the inspiration that being involved with the “king of the Mahasiddhas” brings is noticeable. In this essay I will gather specific elements of various narratives into a central theme, with the goal of letting a full picture of Saraha’s life emerge.
