Harrison J. Pemberton

Harrison Pemberton has taught philosophy for half a century after receiving his Ph.D at Yale University. Although his main focus has been Western thought, especially Plato, ever since he was in the U.S. occupation forces in Japan after World War II, he has kept alive an interest in Eastern thought as well. He has taught at Yale, The University of Virginia, and Washington and Lee University where he is now professor emeritus of philosophy. He has also been a visiting professor at the University of Texas, California State University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and recently at the Karma Shri Diwakar Institute of Buddhist Studies in Kalimpong, India.

Dr. Pemberton is the author of The Buddha Meets Socrates, the journal of an American professor who traveled to the Himalayan foothills of India to become the private tutor of one the highest lamas in Tibetan Buddhism, the young 17th Karmapa. Seeing Western and Eastern ways of thought in contrast sharpened both of them, and the actual encounter opened a promising new perspective. It is published by Xlibris books.
