Hannah Nydahl

Hannah Nydahl (1946-2007) together with her husband Ole became the first Western students of H.H. the 16th Karmapa in December 1969. For over 30 years, she interpreted for the highest Karma Kagyü teachers, including the 16th Karmapa, Lopon Tsechu Rinpoche and Kalu Rinpoche, and translated many Tibetan Buddhist texts on teachings, practice, and philosophy.

Hannah Nydahl died on April 1, 2007. She was 60 years old. For the last 35 years, alongside her husband Lama Ole Nydahl and virtually without pause, she worked for the growth and development of Tibetan Buddhism in the West. She was a lama in the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. She worked closely with some of the most significant meditation masters and spiritual leaders of Tibetan Buddhism—beginning with Lopon Tsechu Rinpoche, then with H.H. the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, H.H. the 14th Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche, Kalu Rinpoche, and most recently with H.H. the 17th Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje.
