Kalu Rinpoche

Kalu Rinpoche (1905–1989) was a Buddhist lama, teacher, scholar and meditation master who was one of the first Tibetan masters to teach in the West. From age fifteen to twenty-five, he studied in monasteries in Tibet, after which he practiced as a solitary yogi for over fifteen years. Returning to Kham, Kalu Rinpoche became the abbot of a meditation center, and the meditation teacher of the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa. He remained in that position until the situation in Tibet forced him into exile in India. He began attracting Western students, including Lama Ole Nydahl and Hannah Nydahl, and in the 1970s was teaching in Europe and the Americas. In France, he established the first retreat center to teach the traditional three-year retreats of the Karma Kagyu lineages to Western students.
